A LITTLE HISTORY

According to the oral tradition, the Puppet “Bando Marroquí” was based on Villena in 1866. The first written data known date of today that guarantees its existence in Century XIX, is of 1877 and is damascening in an arquebus. The legend does not leave place to doubts: “VILLENA. PUPPET OF MOROCCO. 1877”.

On the other hand and thanks to our brother Puppet of the “Marrocs” of Bocairent, we know that “Morocco” of Villena already existed in 1867, because those of Bocairent went out for the first time in 1868, after to have inspired by the Villenenses due to a trip that years before (between 1860-1867), several friendly to Villena in Celebrations did. We have to remember that all the denominated old Puppets of Morocco, Moroccans or similar, are all later to 1860, year in which finishes the Spanish Campaign (1859-1860) in that North African country.

The Puppets of Century XIX thus denominated or similarly, are all direct consequence of that War. We have founded suspicions that Puppet of Morocco de Villena was first thus denominated, although until the investigation does not finish that we took in course, we cannot demonstrate it scientifically. The first Oficial name was “Bando de Marroquíes of the Riff”, denominating at the moment “Bando Marroquí”, although for whole Villena we are “Morocco”.
